Hey friend,

The monthly reflection + action guide for paid subscribers is here 🎉

I have a question for you:

Are you procrastinating on something? Or perhaps, many things?

BEEN THERE.

It would only be a very slight exaggeration to say that procrastination is the story of my LIFE.

Why we procrastinate

Here’s the thing: There’s nothing wrong with you if you procrastinate. You’re not lazy, careless, or a bad person.

The reason1 why we procrastinate has nothing to do with any of those things.

The actual reason that we procrastinate is to avoid negative feelings.

We procrastinate because it’s an effective way of avoiding the feeling associated with the task at hand.

(As an aside: There are other underlying reasons that are associated with more procrastination, too: for example, certain mental illnesses as well as insomnia. So if that resonates, give yourself a big extra serving of compassion and understanding and seek support or tools to work through that.)

Moving beyond procrastination

Let’s get to the good stuff, shall we?

The good news is now that we know about procrastination and what’s at the heart of it
we can do something about it.

What follows in the rest of this piece is my guide to tackling procrastination. I sincerely hope it helps you — I know that this approach has certainly helped me!

So, fill in the blank! I’m procrastinating on ______.

Got it? You’re ready to move on to step 2 —
